Models for gapped boundaries and domain walls

چکیده
We define a class of lattice models for two-dimensional topological phases with boundary such that both the bulk and the boundary excitations are gapped. The bulk part is constructed using a unitary tensor category C as in the Levin-Wen model, whereas the boundary is associated with a module category over C. We also consider domain walls (or defect lines) between different bulk phases. A domain wall is transparent to bulk excitations if the corresponding unitary tensor categories are Morita equivalent. Defects of higher codimension will also be studied. In summary, we give a dictionary between physical ingredients of lattice models and tensorcategorical notions.

Gapped domain walls, gapped boundaries, and topological degeneracy.
Gapped domain walls, as topological line defects between (2+1)D topologically ordered states, are examined. We provide simple criteria to determine the existence of gapped domain walls, which apply to both Abelian and non-Abelian topological orders. Our criteria also determine which (2+1)D topological orders must have gapless edge modes, namely, which (1+1)D global gravitational anomalies ensur...

متن کاملGround-state degeneracy for abelian anyons in the presence of gapped boundaries
Gapped phases with long-range entanglement may admit gapped boundaries. If the boundary is gapped, the ground-state degeneracy is well-defined and can be computed using methods of Topological Quantum Field Theory. We derive a general formula for the ground-state degeneracy for abelian Fractional Quantum Hall phases, including the cases when connected components of the boundary are subdivided in...
متن کاملTopological color code and symmetry-protected topological phases
We study (d − 1)-dimensional excitations in the d-dimensional color code that are created by transversal application of the Rd phase operators on connected subregions of qubits. We find that such excitations are the superpositions of electric charges and can be characterized by the fixed-point wave functions of (d − 1)dimensional bosonic symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases with (Z2)⊗d s...

The electronic properties of a particular class of domain walls in gapped graphene are investigated. We show that they can support mid-gap states which are localized in the vicinity of the domain wall and propagate along its length. With a finite density of domain walls, these states can alter the electronic properties of gapped graphene significantly. If the mid-gap band is partially filled,th...
